Surgical Breast Oncology

About the department

The Surgical Breast Oncology is the only fully specialized breast surgery oncology clinic operating in the National Health System in Northern Greece. The clinic has been operating with this specialization for more than 30 years as Theagenio has always been a pioneer in separating specialties in the general surgery clinics since then. We apply all modern surgical techniques related to breast surgery with a focus on the oncological treatment of the patient. The clinic was one of the first in Greece to apply the sentinel lymph node technique in 2000. Today we apply breast and lymph node biopsy for the identification of the disease before any therapeutic intervention, the placement of markers for the marking of the tumor and lymph nodes, and we have the possibility of intra-operative mammography of the preparation with 3D imaging through a special machine for the detection of microcalcifications and the assessment of resection margins a technique that does not exist in any other breast clinic. In collaboration with plastic surgeons, there is a possibility of plastic reconstruction in breast cancer patients when it is oncologically safe. The clinic participates in the weekly breast oncology board where decisions are made on all cases we treat. In terms of outpatient clinics, regular outpatient clinics are run daily where patients and patients with breast conditions are followed up post-operatively. New patients are seen within the same week. In addition, a preventive check-up clinic operates 3 times a week. The scientific staff (medical and nursing staff) has many years of extremely long experience due to the very large number of patients served.
