About the department
The Department of Anesthesiology of the “Theagenio” Hospital of Thessaloniki started its service at 1976. Until 1985 it was a joint department with the Intensive Care Unit.
It provides quality peri-operative care to all patients undergoing surgery, ensuring that the newest techniques and drugs are used by experienced and trained anesthesiologists.
Although all anesthesiologists in the department have extensive training in all fields of anesthesiology, some have additional experience and training, providing anesthesia for special procedures such as thoracic surgery.
It prepares anesthesiology residents to administer anesthesia and manage pain and intensive care for patients presenting multiple health issues, such as cancer patients. It is well known that the operations of these patients can carry increased severity depending on the various forms and localizations of cancer, so the anesthesiologist has to deal with the full range of technical and pharmacological problems, surgical severity, and metabolic problems caused by cancer.
The supported procedures are:
general surgery, thoracic surgery, gynecological, ENT, urology, maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and various other procedures such as colonoscopies, endoscopies, ERCP, performed by gastroenterologists, biopsies performed by surgeons, hysteroscopies performed by gynecologists, brachytherapy performed by gynecologists and radiotherapists.

Activities
Anesthetists carry out their work in:
- 5 operating rooms
- Resuscitation (post-operative care of surgical patients)
- Emergency department (post-operative surgery (post-operative care of patients after surgery)
- Imaging departments, endoscopic departments (CT scanner)
- Clinics (pre-operative assessment, postoperative analgesia, cardiopulmonary resuscitation)
The rooms operate according to the Surgery Committee’s schedule.
Training is included in the duties of the anesthesiology department of the Theagenio Hospital with a weekly course schedule, participation in workshops and conferences, and participation in educational programs.
The Anesthesiology Department fully meets the specialized scope of the thoracic surgery clinic.
Operating schedule
The staff of the Anesthesia Department administers anesthesia daily during surgical procedures, provides post-operative care, and covers the hospital with all kinds of anesthetic support.
